Djokovic wins four straight O2 crowns

Federer had beaten the world No.1 in the round robin stages on Tuesday – ending a three-month unbeaten run by Djokovic stretching back to Cincinnati in August – but the Serb stepped up his game when it mattered most to claim a convincing 6-3 6-4 victory in the final.

With 11 titles in 2015, and 82 wins from 88 matches, it is the icing on the cake of an incredible season for Djokovic, who was one match away from not only achieving a career Grand Slam, but winning all four majors in one season.

Djokovic, who also became the first man to win six Masters titles in a single season with victory in Paris a fortnight ago, levelled his head-to-head record against Federer to 22 wins apiece after the Swiss edged ahead earlier in the week.

"I am enjoying every moment on the court, I cherish every moment after dreaming of it as a kid. Thank you everyone for making this year so special," said Djokovic. "I am looking forward to our two weeks of holiday with my wife and son and away from tennis for a bit. Congratulations to Roger, it was another epic match today and I hope you enjoy your time off with your family."

After both players had an early chance to break in the opening two service games, it was Djokovic who drew first blood, breaking in the third game of the match. Federer had a further break point, but could not convert, and Djokovic tightened his grip, breaking once again to take the opening set in 39 minutes.

Victory for Federer would have been enough for the 17-time Grand Slam champion to overtake world No.2 Andy Murray in the ATP rankings, but despite a sensational service game, coming back from 0-40 down to hang on at 4-4, Federer could not repeat the heroics two games later when Djokovic carved out two championships points, and a double fault was an unfortunate end to the season for the Swiss.

Earlier on Sunday, Jean-Julien Rojer and Horia Tecau ended the year on a high with victory in the doubles. The Dutch-Romanian pairing, who will end the season as the world No.1 team – having beaten the Bryan brothers in the semi-finals, defeated Rohan Bopanna and Florin Mergea 6-4 6-3 in the final.
