‘Happy to have qualified so early’ – Djokovic becomes first player to book ATP Finals spot
Novak Djokovic has become the first player to qualify for the 2021 ATP Finals in Turin after his Wimbledon triumph.
The world No. 1 defeated Matteo Berrettini in four sets in the championship match at the All England Club to win his sixth Wimbledon title.
The Serbian has qualified for the year-end championships for the 14th-time. He has won the season finale five times – one fewer than Roger Federer’s record of six.
“I am happy to have qualified for Turin so early,” said Djokovic. “Italian fans are very much into tennis so I am sure it will be a great event with a fantastic atmosphere.”
Wimbledon finalist Berrettini moved up to third place in the Race To Turin rankings to improve his chances of making it to the event on home soil.
The 25-year-old is looking to qualify for the event for the second time – having made it to the penultimate London edition in 2019.
Hubert Hurkacz – a semi-finalist at The Championships – has climbed into the eighth and final qualification spot.
Denis Shapovalov – the other beaten semi-finalist – has propelled himself up 12 places into 10th position.
