Disappointment for Emma Raducanu following Transylvania Open decision

Emma Raducanu will no longer play in front of a Romanian crowd at the Transylvania Open after the decision was made to hold the event without fans.

The British star had previously voiced her excitement at playing in her father’s home country for the first time since becoming the US Open champion.

However, a rise in Covid-19 cases in Romania has forced tournament directors to take action and make the decision to hold the event behind closed doors.

There will still be supporters at the qualifying matches over the weekend but from Monday no fans will be permitted to attend the tournament.

The organisers released the following statement on social media confirming they had no choice following a government decision.

“Due to a last moment government decision, we are sadly forced to host Transylvania Open without any fans,” the statement read.

“We did our absolute best to be prepared with the safest possible event in these special circumstances, following all the rules and the safety procedures, and we were confident in our ability to deliver it.

“Now we are incredibly sad to not have you, our friends, in the stands.”

British star Raducanu, who was born in Canada to a Chinese mother and Romanian father, couldn’t contain her excitement at the prospect of playing in front of the Romanian fans.

“I am extremely excited to play at the Transylvania Open, in front of Romanian fans,” said Raducanu earlier this month.

“My father is from Romania, so to participate for the first time in a WTA competition in the country where he was born is a special moment and I can’t wait to get to Cluj.”
