The duo were playing for the first time since Wimbledon – when Dementieva bowed out in the semi-finals to tournament winner Serena Williams, while Keothavong exited in the first round in straight sets to Austrian Patricia Mayr.

Third seed Dementieva eased to a 6-1 6-4 success in a repeat of last year’s US Open third-round match.

Elsewhere at Stanford, Romania’s Monica Niculescu overpowered America’s Meghann Shaughnessy 6-1 6-0, Poland’s Agnieszka Radwanska defeated Romania’s Sorana Cirstea 6-0 6-1, while Hungary’s Melinda Czink saw off Alisa Kleybanova, of Russia, 6-0 7-5.
