The Argentinian, who went out in the group stages of the tournament on his debut last year, was delighted to claim the win after losing his opening match to Andy Murray.

The 21-year-old said: “I was very focused in the important moments, especially in the tie-break. And I took my opportunities. I felt nervous because, if I lose, I go home. But it’s important, the victory, to get confidence.”

Verdasco, who is making his debut at the end-of-season tournament, was disappointed to have lost another match he came close to winning.

He said: “I tried my best and I was really close.

“It was a big opportunity. But it’s not enough to play good tennis to beat these guys. You need to play good tennis and also play very well in the very important moments and not to make mistakes.

“I was pretty close both days but the level of my tennis I think was good. I need to be happy for the level I played, but also at the same time I’m sad because I lost the matches.”
