The Russian, fresh from winning the International German Open in Hamburg, took just 77 minutes to score a 6-2 6-2 win and will next face Alberto Martin, who beat Martin Klizan 6-4 6-4.

Third seed Victor Troicki was the biggest casualty as he was narrowly beaten 6-4 3-6 7-6 (8-6) by Maximo Gonzalez. The Argentinian next plays Oscar Hernandez, who was a 7-6 (7-3) 6-1 winner over Sergiy Stakhovsky.

Second seed David Ferrer was pushed into a third set before beating Daniel Koellerer 6-1 6-7 (7-2) 6-3, while there were also wins for sixth seed Nicolas Almagro and unseeded Ivan Ljubicic.
