The second-seeded Russian cruised to a solid win in the first set but was required to come from a double break down in the second before sealing a 6-1 7-6 (7/4) win over his unseeded opponent from Kazakhstan.
David Ferrer also moved into the second round as the third-seeded Spaniard posted a 6-4 6-1 triumph over compatriot Daniel Gimeno-Traver.
Another Spaniard, number seven seed Albert Montanes, defeated Ryan Sweeting of the United States 6-1 7-6 (7/4) while eighth-seeded Florent Serra of France had to dig deep to see off Diego Junqueira of Argentina in three sets, 6-4 2-6 6-3.
Juan Carlos Ferrero, the former world number one, moved into the next round with a straight-sets win over Mikhail Kukushkin, while there were also wins for Ivan Navarro and Simon Greul.
All the seeds also progressed safely in the women’s draw.
Maria Kirilenko, the second seed from Russia, came from behind to defeat Canada’s Sharon Fichman 6-7 (10/8) 6-4 6-3, while third-seeded Romanian Sorana Cirstea is also into round two after a 6-2 1-6 6-2 victory over Japan’s Kimiko Date Krumm.
Sabrine Lisicki, ranked four, Ekaterina Makarova, the number six seed, and seventh-seeded Shahar Peer all also progressed.
Maret Ani, Elena Bovina, Melinda Czink, Maria Salerni, Barbora Zahlavova Strycova, Petra Kvitova and Olga Govortsova were also first-round winners.
