The 27-year-old Davydenko broke the young Argentinian Davis Cup star twice in each set to advance in one hour and 26 minutes.

Del Potro had beaten Davydenko on clay in September’s Davis Cup semi-final, but the 20-year-old world number eight had no answer on the indoor hardcourt.

Earlier, Paris Masters champion Jo-Wilfried Tsonga fought back from a set down to record a spirited 1-6 7-5 6-1 win over Novak Djokovic, who was already guaranteed a last-four spot, to end his maiden appearance at the circuit finale on a high after losing both his opening round-robin games.

Gold Group winner Djokovic and Davydenko will be joined in the semi-finals by world number four Andy Murray and either two-time defending champion Roger Federer or world number nine Gilles Simon from the Red Group.

Federer must beat Murray on Friday to advance, while a defeat for the four-time Masters Cup winner would hand Simon a place in the last four regardless of his result against Radek Stepanek.
