Daniil Medvedev cruises into Vienna final, now one win from ATP Finals

Daniil Medvedev has all but qualified for the ATP Finals after defeating Grigor Dimitrov to reach the championship match in Vienna.

The world number four won 6-4, 6-2 to reach his fifth final of the season in pursuit of his second trophy in 2022. Medvedev has won all four matches in at the ATP 500 event in straight sets. Moreover, he has not been pushed beyond 6-4 in a set.

“It was a great match,” he said after the victory. “There were a few moments in the match where I was like ‘I should have done just a little bit better to go in front even earlier’ and to try to build the pressure even earlier.

“At the end I managed to stay consistent and in the most important points managed to raise my level. That was enough today. I’m really happy with my level.”

Daniil Medvedev returned to the tour this week in Vienna after time away injured. He retired from his Astana semi-final with Novak Djokovic at the beginning of the month citing a leg injury. Currently fifth in the ATP race to Turin, he would confirm his place there if he defeats Denis Shapovalov in the final.

Nobody has broken Medvedev in Austria this week. In fact, he has only faced one break point all tournament.

“The serve is probably the most important shot in tennis,” he added. “And I was lacking it a little bit this season, doing a little bit too many double faults. Sometimes in important moments my serve could be a little bit better.

“I was working a lot with my coach to try to find this rhythm back. So far I’m serving good here and really happy about it. That’s also why I’m playing so good.”
