Daniil Medvedev ‘too good’ for Cam Norrie as he wins first title of the season
Daniil Medvedev put on a powerful performance to overpower Cam Norrie in the final of Los Cabos.
The world number one has had a truncated summer having been forced to miss Wimbledon, but he returned in style in Mexico.
Medvedev edged a tight first set before running away with the second to win 7-5, 6-0 and claim his first title of the season.
“Every match was very good, but the final is always special,” Medvedev said after the match.
“In the final you play the best player of this week, so it’s always a high-level match and I’m really happy that I managed to show some good level, some good shots in such an important match.”
“It was not easy. Cam is an amazing player, so it was really intense. When you play against Cam, you know that you have to fight for every point.”
Cam Norrie was the defending champion in Los Cabos and he came close to repeating that success. However, he was happy to concede that Daniil Medvedev was on another level in the final.
“I fought as hard as I could, but Daniil, he was too good,” Norrie said. “Well done to you and your team, definitely deserved it this week.”
The win helps boost Medvedev’s hopes of finishing the season as year-end world number one, although the US hardcourt swing will likely determine that.
