Daniil Medvedev thrilled to defeat ‘amazing’ Hubert Hurkacz
Daniil Medvedev outlasted Hubert Hurkacz in a three set marathon to setup a semi-final clash against John Isner at ATP Toronto Masters.
The Russian was the master of his own downfall in the opening set, hitting 20 unforced errors to gift Hurkacz a 6-2 start.
The top seed gathered himself together, producing some outstanding shot-making to stage an epic fightback. Medvedev won two fiercely contested tie-breaks to avenge the five set defeat he took to the Pole at Wimbledon last month.
Medvedev closed out a three set victory with his 22nd ace.
“It was a super-tough match, he was on top of me for many moments,” the winner said. “He was playing amazing and I’m happy to get through.”
The 2019 ATP Toronto Masters finalist talked of upping his level in the deciding set.
“I started playing a little bit better and tried to keep the pressure on him – he was certainly keeping it on me.”
Medvedev will take on Isner in the last four, while Stefanos Tsitsipas and Reilly Opelka will contest the other semi-final.
