Daniil Medvedev faces fitness race for French Open

The World number two Daniil Medvedev has cast doubt over his participation in this year’s French Open, announcing he has been playing with an injury for the ”last months”.

The US Open Champion has confirmed that he is set to undergo surgery on a hernia, with the possibility of him being sidelined for up to two months.

The Russian has started the season in great form, reaching the Australian Open final back in January and also claiming the World number one spot for the first time. However in recent tournaments he has been on the end of some surprise defeats, including  a shock quarter-final loss at the Miami Open this week.

Following the defeat, Medvedev made no reference to any injury problems, yet on Saturday, the former World number one announced the news via Twitter posting, “The last months I have been playing with a small hernia. Together with my team I have decided to have a small procedure done to fix the problem. I will likely be out for the next one to two months and will work hard to be back on court soon. Thanks for all the support.”

Daniil Medvedev, who has never won an ATP tour title on clay, now faces a race against time to be fit for the French Open which commences on the 22nd May. However, the announcement does confirm he is set to miss the majority of the clay court season, including the historic Monte Carlo Masters next week and the Madrid Open next month.
