Daniil Medvedev cruises to first final in Marseille
Daniil Medvedev took another giant step towards his first Marseille title after beating Australian Matthew Ebden in the semi-finals.
The Russian star, who will move to World No 2 in the rankings on Monday, took a closely contested first set 6-4 and quickly took control of the second set, leading 3-0 before the Australian qualifier retired with an injury.
The 25-year-old now advances to his first Marseille final, where he will face one of two Frenchman in Ugo Humbert or Pierre-Hugues Herbert on Sunday.
Speaking of his opponent’s retirement, Daniil Medvedev said: “I am really sorry for Matthew. He was playing some unbelievable tennis this week.”
“Today we were going toe-to-toe and he was the first with opportunities to break so maybe he was even playing better than me. Hopefully, he will recover fast because he also has doubles to play.”
The Russian is pursuing his first individual title of the season after leading his country to ATP Cup glory in February.
