‘Confirmation’ that Roger Federer will make Roland Garros his only clay outing after extended break from tennis

Roger Federer appears likely to make Roland Garros his only clay court event of the season.

Federer only returned to playing the clay season at all last year after a three-year break from the surface.

It was a fruitful return too, with Federer reaching the French Open semi-finals before losing to eventual winner Rafael Nadal.

If he is going to go well at Roland Garros this year too, though, he will need to hit the ground running after his agent Tony Dodsick reportedly ‘confirmed’ Federer will give The Italian Open and the Madrid Masters a miss beforehand.

“Just got the confirmation from Tony Godsick that rumours are not true that Roger Federer will play Masters-Tournaments in Rome and Madrid 2020,” respected Swiss journalist Rene Stauffer said on Twitter.

“Probably only Roland Garros on clay.”

That would certainly correlate with Federer’s comments before his Match in Africa exhibition event, where he said he was scheduling in an extended break later in the season.

It would leave him with a seven-week break between the Miami Open and the French Open, whoch he will be hoping keeps him fresh for the hectic summer schedule that features Roland Garros, Wimbledon, the Olympics, and the US Open.
