Coco Gauff secured the Wuhan Open title on Sunday after defeating compatriot Jessica Pegula in straight sets.

Gauff, who has won her first nine hard-court finals, fought from two breaks down in the second set to win the contest 6-4, 7-5.

The 21-year-old has now won 11 WTA titles [including doubles], and few would bet against her adding to that total in 2026.

Gauff was particularly dominant in Wuhan, failing to drop a set in five matches.

This dominance was reflected in one particular statistic upon the conclusion of Sunday’s final.

Coco Gauff’s record-breaking Wuhan Open campaign

Coco Gauff continues to make history.

As per OptaAce, Coco Gauff has lost the fewest games on the way to winning the Wuhan Open title since the tournament’s inception in 2014.

Gauff lost just 25 games during this year’s tournament, 11 fewer than Petra Kvitova did in 2016.

Gauff will now look ahead to the remaining tournaments of 2025 – most significantly, the WTA Finals.

The American is the defending champion and will consequently go to Riyadh with 1,500 points to defend.

Gauff’s performance against Pegula

Coco Gauff was the deserved victor against her compatriot on Sunday.

In what was a chaotic match that included 10 breaks of serve, Gauff proved the cooler of the two players, holding her nerve throughout the second set after falling into a 3-0 hole.

As per Sofascore, the American’s performance on her first serve was admirable.

The 21-year-old made 74 per cent of her first serves, winning 63 per cent of those points.

However, Gauff will need to continue strengthening her second serve. After all, she hit eight double faults and won only 37 per cent of her second serve points against Pegula.
