Coco Gauff and Jessica Pegula suffer WTA Finals woes

Coco Gauff and Jessica Pegula will not progress to the semi-finals of the WTA Finals in either singles or doubles, their fate sealed even before the end of the group stage.

After Gauff lost to Caroline Garcia and Pegula to Maria Sakkari, both needed a win in their second singles round robin match. But Gauff lost in straight sets to Daria Kasatkina after Pegula fell to Ons Jabeur, putting them at the bottom of their respective groups.

Moreover, the team lost both their opening doubles matches to put them out of contention for the last four also before their last group tie.

“I think in both the matches, I had opportunities,” Gauff said after losing 7-6 (8-6), 6-3 to Kasatkina. “I made a lot of unforced errors. So I think that’s something that I will have to clean up in the pre-season.”

The teen talent totalled 43 unforced errors over the two-set defeat as she is yet to claim a set in singles in Fort Worth. The emotional toll of the season came through in her contest with Kasatkina as she broken down in tears after being broken at 5-5 in the opening set.

Coco Gauff faces Iga Swiatek in her final group match for a chance at a consolation victory with the world number one already qualified for the last four. However, she goes into the match with an 0-4 record agains the Pole and is yet to win a set off her.

Pegula will look for a farewell win against Aryna Sabalenka, while the Belarusian needs to win to be in with a chance of reaching the semi-finals.
