The 25-year-old Italian defeated former Australian Open finalist Marcos Baghdatis in the opening round and followed up that impressive showing to oust Clement and progress to his first ATP Tour quarter-final in over a year.

Cipolla, ranked 122 in the world, will now meet second seed Ivo Karlovic in the last eight.

The big-serving Croatian was pushed by little known Argentinian Brian Dabul 6-4 7-6 (7/5) in a match that had just one break of serve.

Karlovic served 19 aces in his win, but Dabul was not without his chances to break his service as he passed up all nine of his chances to break.

Marcos Daniel won his second match of the year to surprise Ivan Ljubicic 6-4 6-3.

The Brazilian had notched his first victory of 2009 against Guillermo Canas in the first round and took just 77 minutes to overcome the Croatian in straight sets.

Daniel will now meet fourth seed Andres Seppi, who beat Leonardo Mayer 6-4 6-1 in 72 minutes, in the quarter-finals.

Seppi, who was given a first-round bye, will be favourite to progress against the 120th ranked Daniel, although the Italian is yet to win back-to-back matches this season.
