Cilic too strong for Serra

The 20-year-old, seeded second and now the top man left in the draw after Igor Andreev’s shock exit yesterday, broke his opponent four times to win 6-2 7-5.

Cilic will face his Croatian compatriot Antonio Veic in the last eight after the wild card stunned Russia’s Evgeny Korolev 3-6 7-6 (7/5) 6-4.

In Wednesday’s first-round matches, French fourth seed Paul-Henri Mathieu saw off another home favourite, Roko Karanusic, 6-7 (6/8) 6-1 7-6 (7/3), while fellow Croatian Lovro Zovko was dispatched 6-3 7-5 by Romanian Victor Hanescu.

Croatia’s Ivan Ljubicic, a former world number three, lost his all-Balkan match with Serbian Viktor Troicki 6-4 5-7 6-4.
