Cilic cruises through in Zagreb
Second seed Marin Cilic started his PBZ Zagreb Indoors campaign strongly on Monday, overpowering Frenchman Arnaud Clement 6-4, 6-3.
Cilic fired down 12 aces and will now meet Florent Serra of France in the second round of the ATP World Tour 250 event. World No.57 Serra battled past compatriot Marc Gicquel 6-2, 4-6, 7-6.
Ivan Ljubicic, Cilics countryman, made light work of his first round match, seeing off Belgian Christophe Rochus 6-4, 6-1 in just 57 minutes. Ljubicic is looking to make his first ATP Tour quarter-final since last May.
Other players tasting first round success were Croatias wild card Antonio Velc who overcame Guillermo Canas, and Russian Teimuraz Gabashvili who ousted Mikhail Youzhny.
At the SA Open in Johannesburg, the only shock on day one came from South African wild card Rik de Voest who knocked out sixth-seeded Spaniard Ivan Navarro 6-3, 6-4.
Eighth-seeded Marcos Baghdatis overcame ATP World Tour debutant Andrew Anderson 6-4, 6-2. Cypriot Baghdatis, who reached the fourth round at the Australian Open, will play South African Raven Klaasen in the second round of the ATP World Tour 250.
Elsewhere in the draw, 21-year-old Leornardo Mayer, the youngest player at the event, conquered fellow Argentine Sergio Roitman 6-2, 6-4 and will play Guillermo Garcia-Lopez of Spain in the next round.
At the Movistar Open in Chile, it was a good day for Argentina as Juan Ignacio Chela, Juan Monaco and Martin Vassallo Arguello all reached the second round.
Chela, who has been injured since Roland Garros in June, triumphed over Spains Pablo Andujar 6-0, 3-6, 6-1. Fifth seed Monaco needed less time to defeat Frenchman Nicolas Devilder 6-2, 6-4 while Arguello beat eighth seed Oscar Hernandez 6-3, 7-6.
Potito Starace, Daniel Gimeno-Traver and Paul Capdeville all went through.
