Chardy sees off Dimitrov

The Frenchman struck at the business end of both sets to register just his third Top 5 victory and inflict more misery on his out-of-sorts opponent.
Dimitrov lacked conviction throughout his latest defeat – and his slump is becoming prolonged. The world No.4 has endured a dismal sunshine double, and he looked shell-shocked as he made a sharp exit from Stadium Court.
Chardy, who has had issues with his ball-toss and backhand in recent campaigns, is back on an upward curve again. The 31-year-old was composed and disciplined throughout his duel with the Bulgarian, and he did not drop serve once.
The first set drifted along without incident until the 10th game. While attempting to stay alive in the set, Dimitrov committed numerous errors to donate the opening gambit to his grateful opponent.
Despite only hitting three winners, Chardy was within touching distance of a significant victory. He was more assertive in the second set though, and almost snatched a break in the fourth game.
Dimitrov saved two break-points and clung on to his delivery, however it was only a temporary reprieve. In the 10th game, the Frenchman carved open a match-point opportunity – and he skelped an unstoppable forehand winner to wrap up a big win in style.
Chardy will encounter either Milos Raonic or Diego Schwartzman in the last sixteen on Tuesday.
