The 22-year-old prevailed 1-6 6-3 6-4 against his Romanian opponent to become the first Frenchman to triumph at the event since Henri Leconte in 1984.

Hanescu romped through the first set but a break of serve in the sixth game of the second set helped Chardy get back on level terms and he continued the momentum by racing into a 4-0 lead in the third. Hanescu fought back but a fourth break of serve late in the third set saw Chardy clinch the title.
