Caty McNally and Coco Gauff’s doubles run at the Italian Open has come to an abrupt end.
Gauff and McNally are former doubles partners, having won three WTA titles together, but had not played together since 2023.
However, they reunited in Rome after Gauff reached out to McNally to play together once again.
Gauff and McNally had won their first two matches to reach the Italian Open quarterfinals, but they did not even take to the court after pulling out.

Gauff has reached the Italian Open singles final for the second successive year in Rome, but she will not be getting her hands on the doubles title.
It was initially unclear as to why Gauff and McNally were unable to take to the court for their quarterfinal against seventh seeds Cristina Bucsa and Nicole Melichar-Martinez, but it has now been clarified.
McNally released a statement on Instagram to reveal that illness meant that she was the reason why she and Gauff withdrew from the tournament.
She wrote, “Sad to have to pull out of the dubs today due to sickness, unfortunately my body just couldn’t recover in time.
“Time to get some rest and recover for the French [Open] (three love heart emojis).”

Are Caty McNally and Coco Gauff playing doubles together at the French Open?
It is unclear as to when McNally and Gauff will return to the doubles court together, as they are not entered into the French Open together.
Gauff won the French Open singles title last year, and is focusing on defending her crown instead of playing doubles as well.

McNally will be in the doubles draw at the French Open though, as she partners former world number one Storm Hunter.
They will join the likes of Venus Williams and Hailey Baptiste, Alexandra Eala and Victoria Mboko, as well as top seeds Katerina Siniakova and Taylor Townsend.
But first, Gauff will play Elina Svitolina for the Italian Open title on Saturday, May 16.
