Casper Ruud is the latest big-name star to offer his verdict on the controversial tennis schedule.
This is a topic that consistently arises and draws widespread frustration from the players it impacts.
After all, they are being worked tirelessly, forced to relentlessly play throughout the entire year with minimal breaks and severe punishments should they rebel.
Casper Ruud, in his latest conversation on this topic, has actually now proposed a rough solution.
Casper Ruud has a solution to fix the tennis schedule
Speaking with Tennis Magazin, the former world number two was asked specifically about Alexander Zverev’s complaints about the tennis schedule. That being said, there are plenty more big names who have been unafraid to share their issues on this topic, with Iga Swiatek one of the foremost critics.
Alas, Ruud responded by admitting: “I understand the criticism. The season is very demanding, especially mentally. But I also think that we need to find solutions that protect the health of the players without taking away their chances, especially the players from the lower ranks.”
Is some of the tennis schedule irrelevant?
Asked to provide a potential solution, he then added: “Clearer breaks, a slightly shorter calendar and perhaps more flexibility for mandatory events. Recovery time should be seen as performance-enhancing, not a luxury.”
The Danish tennis star has played just two tournaments this year, although Ruud was praised for his performances at the Australian Open.
He has missed all competitions since the birth of his child.
Iga Swiatek’s complaints about the tennis calendar
As referenced earlier, Zverev is not the only player to have complained about the tennis schedule, nor will he be the last.
After all, this is an issue that has spanned decades, and despite incremental changes to the calendar, it feels like a true solution will never be found.
Do you think Iga Swiatek will win a Grand Slam this season?
Iga Swiatek is one of the schedule’s most vocal critics, having stated just last year: “Well, when I look at the schedule, I think we’re playing too much, and the schedule is crazy.
“That’s the first thing probably that will pop into my head. The schedule is really demanding and tough.”
Many have suggested solutions, but thus far, the ATP and WTA have yet to implement enough wholesale changes to make any meaningful impact on this outstanding issue.
