CARLOS ALCARAZ US Open 2021

‘My game is most similar to Roger Federer’, says Carlos Alcaraz

Rising Spanish star Carlos Alcaraz pointed to Roger Federer as the player his game is most comparable to after his US Open upset against Stefanos Tsitsipas.

The 18-year-old believes the intent to be “aggressive all the time” is the main attribute he shares with the 20-time major champion.

World number 55 Alcaraz stunned third seed Tsitsipas in a five-set epic in the third round of the 2021 US Open on Friday.

Alcaraz – who is making his debut at the tournament – is through to the fourth round of a Grand Slam event for the first time in his career.

“Honestly, I don’t copy any style of other players – I just play my game. But if I have to say one player that is similar [to] game, I think it’s Federer,” Alcaraz said in a press conference.

“I think [Federer is] similar as my game, trying to be aggressive all the time. I think it is a good similar [player]. Yeah, trying to be aggressive all the time with the forehand, backhand. I think I have to improve a little bit the serve, but I think it is similar.

“I mean, I have not words to explain how I feel right now. I just don’t what happened out there in the court. So, I can’t believe I beat Stefanos Tsitsipas in a big match. For me, it’s a dream come true.

“(On the crowd support) It surprised me, really. The crowd was behind me all the time, supporting me, pushing me up in every moment. So, it surprised me, really.”

The Spaniard will face world number 141 Peter Gojowczyk in the last 16 in New York.
