Carlos Alcaraz ‘can be world number one,’ says Grand Slam Legend

Seven-time Grand Slam champion Boris Becker believes that Spanish teen sensation Carlos Alcaraz will become world number one provided he continues ‘normally.’

The 18-year-old Alcaraz has made incredible strides this season in his career, with the man from Murcia becoming the youngest player in Tour history to win an ATP 500 event and also becoming the youngest ever Miami Open champion.

However, this week Alcaraz’s significant progress was halted as he suffered a surprise loss in his opening match at the Monte Carlo Masters to America’s Sebastian Korda.

Despite the loss, former world number one Becker believes that following his success so far this year, there is no reason as to why Carlos Alcaraz cannot reach the top spot of the ATP rankings.

Speaking to Eurosport he said, “If everything continues normally, then yes he can be world number one.

“He’s only 18, but you only have to look at the way he’s played over the last six months. He went to Miami and just kept winning. He has the mentality to not just be satisfied with reaching a semi-final, or be playing the best players in the world – he wants to go further and [we saw that] by winning his first Masters title against a top opponent. So he can become No. 1, but anything can happen in sport.”

Alcaraz himself has not been shy about his aspirations to reach the number one spot, with other players such as Andy Murray believing he will be at the top of the game very soon. However, 54-year-old Boris Becker has previously warned that the teen tennis star must stay grounded and focused and not believe in his own hype, if he is to achieve his goals.
