Carlos Alcaraz Novak Djokovic 2022

‘Carlos Alcaraz and Novak Djokovic are the favourites for Roland Garros,’ declares Stefanos Tsitsipas

World number five Stefanos Tsitsipas has revealed his favourites for this years French Open title, stating that Carlos Alcaraz and Novak Djokovic will be the most likely to lift the La Coupe des Mousquetaires in 2022.

Djokovic and Alcaraz have had contrasting season’s so far in 2022, yet both are finding their best form ahead of the French Open next week.

The 19-year-old Alcaraz has made incredible strides in 2022, with the man from Murcia becoming the youngest player in Tour history to win an ATP 500 event and also becoming the youngest ever Miami Open champion.

Alcaraz has continued his great form on clay too, as the 19-year-old claimed back-to-back titles for the first time in his career in Barcelona and Madrid.

The victory in Madrid last week meant that Alcaraz is now sitting at a career high sixth in the world as he looks to “rest and recover” ahead of only his second French Open appearance.

Alternatively, Novak Djokovic was forced to miss both the Australian Open and the ‘Sunshine Double’ events in Miami and Indian Wells due to his vaccination status.

He also has had a difficult season on the court as he suffered shock defeats in Dubai and Monte Carlo.

However, Djokovic seems to be returning to his old imperious self just at the right time ahead of the French Open as he claimed a record-extending 38th Masters title at the Rome Open after defeating Stefanos Tsitsipas on Sunday.

Following the match, the Greek number one was asked about his chances at the French Open as he stated that Carlos Alcaraz and Novak Djokovic were the leading contenders for the Paris Slam and that he has a lot of work to do if he is to compete with them.

When asked for his French Open favourites, Tsitsipas told reporters, “Right now Carlos Alcaraz or Novak Djokovic. They both play great, great tennis. I would put them as favourites.

“Right now I need to improve a few things in my game. I don’t know if I’m going to get there, but I hope I do with my hard work by the time Roland Garros begins.

“I’d love myself to get around with these players and be there with them. But I will really need to put a bit more attention to detail in the next couple of weeks.”
