Heather Watson advanced to the second round of Wimbledon qualifying after beating Egyptian Mayar Sherif on Tuesday afternoon.

Watson, now ranked 491st on the WTA Tour, defeated Sherif 6-2, 6-2 in Roehampton.

The British star, once ranked 38th on the Tour, will play Russian player Tatiana Prozorova in the second round of Wimbledon qualifying.

Watson was one of two British players to advance in qualifying on Tuesday.

Esther Adenina, 24, caused quite possibly the biggest shock of the day. The world number 514, a wildcard, defeated eighth seed Moyuka Uchijima 6-1, 3-6, 7-5.

Unfortunately for British tennis fans, Watson and Adenina were the only two Britons to advance on the second day of qualifying.

Five British players exit Wimbledon qualifying

Ella McDonald, Katy Dunne, Yuriko Miyazaki, Amelia Rajecki, and Daniella Britton all fell short in Roehampton on Tuesday afternoon.

McDonald, the world’s number 536, was defeated 3-6, 7-6, 6-4 by 31st seed Elvina Kalieva.

Dunne was beaten by 15th seed Aliaksandra Sasnovich, while Miyazaki [pictured below] exited the event at the hands of Elizara Yaneva.

Rajecki, who also received a wildcard for qualifying, was beaten by Suzan Lammens in the first round.

Impressive youngster Daniella Britton, 15, led Julia Riera by a set and a break. However, she was unable to hold on to her lead, eventually losing 6-2, 2-6, 4-6.

Heather Watson and Esther Adenina are the two remaining players in the Wimbledon Women’s Singles qualifying draw.

As mentioned already, Watson will play Tatiana Prozorova in the next round. Adenina will compete against Harmony Tan – the last player to beat Serena Williams at Wimbledon.
