Kyle Edmund Wimbledon

British number one Kyle Edmund cruises into second round

Kyle Edmund looked in formidable form on centre court as he beat Jaume Munar 6-4 6-4 6-4 to reach his third successive second round at SW19.

Tipped as Britain’s best hope in the men’s draw, Kyle Edmund only seemed in trouble early on. His Spanish opponent came into the tie on a 6 match losing streak, but found himself an early break up at 2-0.

The deficit seemed to inspire the South African born Brit, who then powered on to win four successive games and take control of the set.

Getting over the finish line seemed to be an issue for Edmund today, who had to wait until his 10th set point to close the first set.

Despite having a poor start to the year and an injury at the French Open, Edmund has been able to pick up some confidence of recent when he made the semi-finals at Eastbourne. Jaume Munar on the other hand has never won a professional match on grass and was appearing at Wimbledon for his first time, after failing to qualify last year.

Edmund made much lighter work of the second set, looking more confident on his opening service games. The 31st ranked player in the world broke the Munar serve at 2-2.

At 5-3 Munar was able to save three more set points, and force the home favourite to serve the set out. This time Edmund did not fail to take set points as he held serve to love, with his opponent visibly frustrated.

Edmund secured an early double break in the third set and, despite a resilient fight back from the 22 year old Munar to get the set back to 5-4, Edmund held firm to serve the match out at the second time of asking.

Edmund will face Fernando Verdasco in the second round, who progressed with the same scoreline against Polish qualfiier Kamil Majchrzak. Though Edmund is the seeded player, Verdasco boasts a 2-0 record in their previous meetings, including a closely fought victory in Rome two months ago.
