Baltacha, seeded 19th, came from a set down to defeat American Carly Gullickson 5-7 6-0 6-0 to set up a tie with top seed Jelena Kostanic Tosic, who defeated Anne Schaefer of Germany 6-3 6-4.

O’Brien also battled back from a set down to win her second-round match against Julie Ditty 3-6 6-3 6-3.

O’Brien will play 21st seed Betina Jozami of Argentina after she overcame Ksenia Palkina 2-6 6-4 6-4.

However, there was disappointment for Georgie Stoop, who came up just short against Germany’s Kathrin Woerle in an epic three-set battle.

Woerle took the first set 6-3, only for Stoop to take the second 7-5 to set up a mammoth third set, which Woerle eventually won 14-12.
