Carlos Alcaraz has taken a big unnecessary risk which has almost immediately backfired

Carlos Alcaraz had enjoyed a stellar start to 2026, and at one point, fans wondered if he would ever lose a match.

After all, having claimed the Australian Open title and backed that up with another easy trophy in Qatar, the Spaniard seemed unstoppable.

Alas, the past month and a half have not been so kind to the world number two, who has dropped off the ranking top spot and lost in his first meeting with Jannik Sinner of the season.

However, having rushed to Barcelona in an effort to play the first event in his home country this year, Carlos Alcaraz could have just suffered perhaps his biggest setback yet. It threatens to derail his entire 2026 campaign.

Carlos Alcaraz delivers worrying injury update after Barcelona

Midway through his first-round win over Otto Virtanen, Alcaraz required treatment.

He was heard telling the physio that, whenever he hit a forehand, he felt a ‘sharp’ pain through his forearm.

Should Carlos Alcaraz have skipped the Barcelona Open? Did he make a mistake by playing it?

Such is his quality and perseverance, the 22-year-old still won the match in straight sets, but it seems the damage had already been done.

It did not take him long to withdraw from the event, and explaining the decision, Alcaraz offered a worrying fitness update: “It’s a more serious injury than we expected when we saw the results of this morning’s tests.

“I’m stepping back to avoid taking any risks.”

It’s ironic that he has chosen now to avoid taking any risks, when coming to Barcelona in the first place was already the biggest risk he could have taken, which has almost instantly backfired.

Carlos Alcaraz could have derailed his entire season

Alcaraz can be forgiven for his desperation to play in Spain. After all, there are not that many top tournaments in his homeland, and so the opportunity to feature in front of a home crowd must be taken.

Alas, he was given this exact warning last year, and clearly did not learn from that mistake.

Rushing from Monte Carlo to Barcelona, Alcaraz suffered an injury in 2025, and it arguably cost him the final against Holger Rune. He was then forced to withdraw from Madrid, and had many fearing for his fitness as Roland Garros approached.

On this occasion, the issue seems far more severe, and it risks derailing his entire campaign.

Having already won the first Grand Slam of the season, and instantly translated that form onto clay with a final already, things were looking promising for Alcaraz despite his loss to Sinner.

When do you think he will return?

And now, instead of resting and preparing himself for Madrid, he faces a race against time to be fit for the rest of the clay-court season, nursing an issue that was far more ‘serious’ than he first anticipated.

Perhaps next year, Alcaraz will remove Barcelona from his calendar altogether.
