After top seed Agnieszka Radwanska was ousted in her first round meeting with China’s Li Na on Monday, Bartoli came through her first round encounter 6-2 6-4, while Italian third seed Flavia Pennetta beat American Jill Craybas 6-1 6-0 in under an hour to also advance to the second round at Sierra Madre Tenis Club.

World number 13 Bartoli broke Krajicek’s first service game to establish a 2-0 lead and it quickly became a double-break advantage for the 24-year-old with another quick break.

Bartoli failed to consolidate the advantage as she reeled off three straight double-faults to hand Krajicek the fourth game.

But after two straightforward holds, Krajicek’s serve was broken for a third time for a 5-2 lead before Bartoli deservedly served out to claim the opening set in 35 minutes.

Krajicek improved at the start of the second set and the 20-year-old had a chance to grab an early break but sent a backhand long at 2-1 with Bartoli scrambling to recover.

The tight first set continued until the ninth game when Krajicek was punished for a sloppy service game as Bartoli grabbed the crucial break before wrapping up the win in one hour and 25 minutes to advance to the round of 16.

Pennetta had an easy time with Craybas, winning 66% of the points and blasting eight aces against just one double fault. The Italian will face Czech Barbora Zahlavova Strycova, who beat Anna-Lena Groenefeld in a 6-3 6-2 7-6 (7/4), in the second round.

Sixth seeded Czech Iveta Benesova also advanced with a 6-4 6-2 triumph over Shahar Peer of Israel, while fifth seeded Hungarian Agnes Szavay beat Frenchwoman Pauline Parmentier 6-2 6-2.

American qualifier Vania King beat Czech Klara Zakopalova 6-1 6-4, while Italian Roberta Vinci and Mariya Koryttseva of Ukraine also moved into the second round alongside Hungary’s Melinda Czink and another Czech Petra Cetkovska.
