Barcelona Open 2020 preview: Can Nadal make it 12?

The 68th edition of the Barcelona Open will run from April 20th – April 26th, 2020. Barcelona is an ATP 500 event and is Spain’s second most prestigious tournament following the ATP Madrid Open. Rafael Nadal will try for a 12th title in his home country.

The tournament has been hosted at the Real Club de Tenis Barcelona, the oldest Spanish club in history, since 1953. Spanish players have had vast success at these championships. Carlos Moya, Fernando Verdasco and Tommy Robredo have all been winners here.

Preview:

There is stiff competition for Nadal this year. Defending champion, Dominic Thiem will try for his second title in Barcelona. Thiem ended Nadal’s three-year winning streak at the tournament last year defeating him in straight sets.

Kei Nishikori is a two-time champion in Barcelona and will look to win this title for the first time since 2015. Nishikori has not played this year due to a nagging right elbow injury, but is expected to make his return in February at Rotterdam.

Alexander Zverev has no points to defend this year, as he experienced a shocking first round loss to Nicolas Jarry in 2019.
