Frenchwoman Aravane Rezai breezed past the Austrian 6-2 6-2 to claim her place in round two. The third and fourth seeds had no such worries, however.

China’s Shuai Peng had to work hard but eventually prevailed 3-6 6-2 6-0 against American Alexa Glatch, while Argentinian Gisela Dulko saw off Italy’s Mara Santangelo 6-1 7-6 (7/3).

In other first-round matches today, Kristina Barrois of Germany overcame Frenchwoman Irena Pavlovic 6-3 6-3 while Japan’s Ayumi Morita was a 6-1 6-3 victor against Kinnie Laisne, also of France.
