Australian Open delay leads to multiple adjustments to the 2021 calendar


Following the delay to the Australian Open now scheduled for 8th February, discussions regarding fresh adjustments to the 2021 calendar have started to take place.

One such adjustment could see the Delray Beach Open held at the beginning of January as opposed to mid-February, with tournament organisers reported to be interested in the vacant January 4th slot.

Multiple outlets are also reporting that the Australian Open qualifying is likely to take place outside of the country, before bringing competitors to Melbourne for a mandatory 14-day quarantine.

Another potential adjustment to the calendar includes the possibility of staging a shortened ATP Cup a week ahead of the Australian Open.

The ATP Cup premiered for the first time in 2020 and was played across three Australian cities in ten days, featuring a total of 24 countries. Discussions regarding the changes to this event have not been confirmed.

A second event in Melbourne during the latter stages of the Australian Open has also been touted, giving players a chance of playing more matches should they face an early exit at Melbourne Park.

The Indian Wells Masters is another tournament set for postponement, with the indoor-hard event in Marseille reported to be eyeing the spot.

In a statement on its website on Tuesday the ATP 250 tournament confirmed, “The Open 13 Provence is likely to take place in March from 8 to 14. Everything will depend on whether Indian Wells is maintained or not.”
