ATP Finals Preview: Novak Djokovic
Novak Djokovic comes into the ATP finals after equalling Pete Sampras’ record for the most seasons finished as the worlds top-ranked player.
The World No 1 enjoyed a great start to the year, overcoming Dominic Thiem in five sets to win the Australian Open before beating Stefanos Tsitsipas to win in Dubai prior to the five-month shut down.
Following the resumption, Djokovic regained his impressive form to win the precursor to the US Open in Cincinnati, before being disqualified against Pablo Carreno Busta in the fourth round at Flushing Meadows after a ball struck the line judge.
After the disappointment of his disqualification at the US Open, Djokovic responded well to win his fifth Italian Open title ahead of the Roland Garros, beating Diego Schwartzman in the final.
At the French Open, Djokovic lost to 13-time champion Rafael Nadal in straight sets, leaving the World No 1 three Grand Slams away from tying Nadal and Federer’s record of 20 major titles.
After beating compatriot Filip Krajinovic and Borna Coric in Vienna, Djokovic fell short to Lorenzo Sonego in the quarter-finals 6-2 6-1 in the joint-heaviest defeat of his career. However, at this stage, Djokovic had already cemented his place at the top of the world rankings for the sixth season in succession.
In the final event of the season, Djokovic will bid to win his sixth Nitto ATP Finals event and his first since 2015
