Aryna Sabalenka continued a bizarre 2025 trend with her Wuhan Open loss to Jessica Pegula

Aryna Sabalenka’s run of 20 victories in a row at the Wuhan Open finally came to an end at the hands of Jessica Pegula.

Pegula once again came from behind at the Wuhan Open to end Sabalenka’s incredible run that dated all the way back to 2019.

The American will now contest a final against her compatriot Coco Gauff on October 12, as both women look to win the tournament for the first time.

Sabalenka’s inability to continue her dominance at the Wuhan Open has been a theme for the rest of the year.

Aryna Sabalenka falls at the chance of the four-peat

Sabalenka is the ninth player to fail to retain her tournament for a third or fourth time at the Wuhan Open.

The World No. 1 joins the likes of Taylor Fritz, Carlos Alcaraz, and Jessica Pegula in failing to win consecutive tournaments more than twice in a row.

Sabalenka has suffered this fate before in 2025, failing to win the Australian Open for a third time in a row at the beginning of the year.

The Belarusian fell to a shock defeat in the Australian Open final against Madison Keys in a thrilling three-set battle.

She’s not the only star who has failed at multiple tournaments, either, as Alcaraz failed to do the same at Indian Wells and Wimbledon.

How does Aryna Sabalenka’s Wuhan Open winning streak stack up to other records?

Sabalenka’s 20 victories on the bounce at the Wuhan Open can only be bettered by two other stars in WTA Tour history.

The World No. 1 matched Caroline Wozniacki’s record at New Haven, but couldn’t come close to two other icons.

Monica Seles has the longest winning streak at a single tournament with an impressive 33 wins on the bounce at the Australian Open.

Steffi Graf is also above Sabalenka with 25 victories in a row at her home tournament in Leipzig.
