Amanda Anisimova Australian Open 2022

‘I’m speechless!’ – Anisimova upsets defending Australian Open champion for biggest career victory

Amanda Anisimova shocked reigning champion Naomi Osaka in a remarkable comeback to set up an Australian Open fourth round clash with home favourite Ashleigh Barty.

Both players delivered excellent displays in what might just be the most exciting women’s match of the Australian Open so far.

The tie was extremely evenly-contested, with both players performing at their best.

After splitting the first two sets, Anisimova triumphed 10-5 in a match tiebreak come the final set, dropping her racket in disbelief after the ace that sealed it.

In her post-match interview, the 20-year-old American was overawed by the moment.

“I’m speechless,” she began.

“I absolutely love playing in front of you guys in Melbourne, honestly it’s so much fun.

“I can’t stop smiling even when I’m playing when I should be serious. But I’m just laughing at what you guys say sometimes.

“Going into this match I knew I had to be playing sharp if I wanted to give myself a chance.”

Anisimova has now reached the fourth round of a Slam for the first time since her breakthrough run to the semi-finals of the 2019 French Open as a 17-year-old.

However, the American said she was just excited to be playing at the Australian Open in the first place, and in front of such a great crowd.

“Honestly, I’m so grateful I was able to play so well today and get this win, it means a lot.

“Stepping onto the court all I’m thinking about is just having fun. Every single day here is an amazing opportunity and experience for me.

“I’m so grateful to just be playing here on this court so I’m just having fun and getting the win is just a huge bonus. I’m looking forward to the next round.”

World number one Barty could prove an even tougher test for Anisimova as the Australian continued to ease through the draw in her third round match.
