Andy Murray to partner Serena in highly anticipated Wimbledon mixed doubles

On his Wimbledon return Andy Murray will partner six time Wimbledon singles champion Serena Williams today in the mixed doubles.

Playing against German Andreas Mies and Chilean Alexa Guarachi, the match was originally scheduled for yesterday. However due to the length of other matches, most noticeably the sensational teenager Coco Gauff’s win against Polona Hercog, the tie has been bought over to this evening to allow Williams rest before her 1pm Centre Court singles match against 18th seed Julia Gorges today.

A court has not yet been assigned to the match, but it is likely that if the last match on Centre Court finishes at an appropriate time, the highly anticipated mixed doubles match will be put on the big stage.

Andy Murray also has another match to play today, prior to partnering Williams. He appears second on Court Two in the men’s doubles alongside French Partner Pierre-Hugues Herbert. They play their second round match against 6th seeded Croatians Franko Skugor and Nikola Mektic.

Murray and Williams practised for the first time together yesterday, in front of family and journalists. Both were seen smiling and laughing, seemingly looking forward to partnering each other for the first time at Wimbledon.

The 32 year old Scot has described the opportunity of playing with Williams as ‘brilliant’, as he continues his return to the sport after hip surgery earlier this year. He partnered Feliciano Lopez in the men’s doubles at Queens on his return, going on to win the tournament. He followed this up at Eastbourne where he partnered Brazilian Marcelo Melo but lost first round to number one seeds Farah and Cabal of Colombia 6-2 6-4.

In their first round match Murray and 28 year old Herbert did well to come from a set down to beat Romanian Marius Copil, and Frenchman Ugo Humbert who has just reached the singles fourth round.

If Murray and Williams are to beat Mies and Guarachi, who lost both their first round matches in the mens and womens doubles respectively, they would set up a second round tie with 14th seeds Fabrice Martin and Raquel Atawo.
