Andy Murray joins the Novak Djokovic team for Sunshine Double
Former rivals reunite as Andy Murray coaches Novak Djokovic in pursuit of titles at upcoming U.S. Master’s 1000 events.
Andy Murray has joined Novak Djokovic’s coaching team for the upcoming Indian Wells and Miami Open tournaments. This collaboration began earlier this year at the Australian Open, where Djokovic reached the semi-finals before retiring due to injury.
Novak Djokovic, a five-time Indian Wells champion, last secured the title in 2016. Similarly, his most recent Miami Open victory also dates back to 2016. Murray, who retired from professional tennis after the 2024 Paris Olympics, has transitioned into coaching, bringing his extensive experience to Djokovic’s team.
Their renewed partnership aims to bolster Djokovic’s performance in the upcoming U.S. tournaments, with Indian Wells starting this week and the Miami Open commencing on March 19. Novak lost to Berrettini at the Qatar Open in February.
Historically, Djokovic and Murray have faced each other 36 times, with Djokovic leading their head-to-head record 25-11. Their rivalry has been one of the most notable in tennis, with both players having reached the pinnacle of the sport.
The decision for Murray to join Djokovic’s coaching team came after Djokovic ended his long-term coaching relationship with Goran Ivanisevic. Murray’s strategic mind and vast experience are expected to provide valuable insights as Djokovic aims to reclaim his dominance in the upcoming tournaments.
Their collaboration is set to continue indefinitely, with plans extending through the clay-court season and potentially beyond. Both Djokovic and Murray have expressed optimism about this partnership, aiming to achieve significant success in the forthcoming tournaments.
Inside the Baseline…
If there’s one thing we’ve learned over the years, it’s that Andy Murray and Novak Djokovic are wired differently from the rest. They are relentless, obsessive, and driven by a need to prove something, even when there’s nothing left to prove. Seeing them on the same side now, with Murray stepping into a coaching role, feels both unexpected and completely inevitable. Who else understands the grind, the mind games, the impossibly high standards better than him? If Djokovic is looking for fresh energy and a tactical mind that refuses to accept anything less than perfection, he’s found the perfect match.
