Andy Murray ‘for sure an inspiration’ claims Daniil Medvedev
Andy Murray gave the biggest indication yet about his future in the sport yesterday, and Daniil Medvedev has revealed that he ‘is going to be sad’ when the Brit does say his final farewell.
Murray was defeated in his second round match at the Dubai Tennis Championships yesterday by Ugo Humbert, with the former No.1 then being asked about retirement in the subsequent press conference.
“Yeah, I mean, I’m likely not going to play past this summer,” revealed Murray. “I get asked about it after every single match that I play, every single tournament that I play. I’m bored of the question, to be honest. I’m not going to talk more about that between now and whenever the time comes for me to stop. But yeah, I don’t plan on playing much past this summer.”
The three-time Grand Slam champion suggested that he intends to play Roland Garros, Wimbledon and finish his career at the Olympic Games in Paris.
And Medvedev, who is still in the tournament in Dubai as defending champion, reacted to the news, “First of all, he’s a fun guy, a great guy to be around. That’s always a great quality in life.”
The 2021 US Open champion continued, “For sure he’s an inspiration of mine because I remember when I was just going up the rankings, that’s the moment when he was winning Slams, playing finals against Roger [Federer], Rafa [Nadal] and Novak [Djokovic]. So the ‘Big Four’. It’s going to be sad when he retires. Even I’m definitely not sure that he’s going to stop this year.
“Wimbledon is a big tournament, maybe Wimbledon and then stop. But while he’s here, it’s going to be fun. [When] he’s not here, I’m sure he’s going to find a good spot in his life after tennis.”
Murray is now scheduled to head to Indian Wells for the potential final time in his career, with the tournament beginning on Wednesday 6th March.

Since his announcement yesterday it has been clear to see just how appreciated Andy Murray is, both from fans and fellow players. It is funny to see Daniil Medvedev questioning whether Murray will actually retire this year, and maybe if the Brit does start to return to form he may reconsider, as it is clear just how much he loves the sport.
