Amanda Anisimova demonstrated immense resilience on Thursday, defeating Jasmine Paolini in three sets to advance to the China Open semi-finals.
The American started erratically, hitting 32 unforced errors in the first set, before fighting back to claim a 6-7, 6-3, 6-4 victory.
This was the latest stepping stone in what has been an impressive year for the 24-year-old American, who has reached Grand Slam finals at Wimbledon and the US Open.
Anisimova will be hoping to win her second WTA 1000 tournament this week, following a maiden victory at the Qatar Open earlier this year.
She has significantly increased her chances of doing so with victory against Paolini, while also setting a new personal record.
Amanda Anisimova sets new personal best at WTA 1000 events

Amanda Anisimova’s triumph over Jasmine Paolini marked the second occasion at the China Open that she had fought back from a set down.
In the previous round, the American bounced back after a poor first set against Karolina Muchova, eventually winning the contest 1-6, 6-3, 6-4.
As per OptaAce, Amanda Anisimova has now secured multiple comeback wins at a WTA 1000 event for the first time in her career.
Anisimova will now face French Open champion Coco Gauff in the semi-finals. The pair have played each other twice before on the WTA Tour, winning one match each.
In 2021, Gauff demolished Anisimova at the Parma Open. A year later, Anisimova had her revenge, defeating Gauff at Wimbledon.
The pair, who have snapped a 21-year American streak by reaching the semi-finals, are scheduled to contest their last four match on Saturday.
Anisimova’s great escape
Amanda Anisimova performed superbly in the most crucial moments against Jasmine Paolini.
The American struggled to impose her will on serve, offering her Italian opponent 14 break-point opportunities.
However, as per Sofascore, Anisimova saved 11 of these 14 chances.

In comparison, the US star was able to convert five of the 11 break-point opportunities she engineered on the Paolini serve.
If Anisimova defeats Coco Gauff in the next round, she will face one of four players in the China Open final: Sonay Kartal, Linda Noskova, Jessica Pegula or Emma Navarro.
