Alfie Hewett, triple Wimbledon champion, signs with iconic Italian sportswear brand ellesse

Since becoming the first ever British player to win the French Open singles, Hewett’s partnership with ellesse is another first for wheelchair tennis

Alfie Hewett is fast becoming a hot property in tennis, partly on the back of a superb 2018 which saw him take home the double at the US Open of both men’s singles and men’s doubles.

Hewett’s career as a tennis player began at the age of six. He had been in a chair since the age of 2 after being diagnosed with Perthes’ disease which causes a softening of the hip bone but he then burst onto the world stage with a quite stunning run in the doubles at Wimbledon in 2016 and then backed this up with further doubles titles in 2017 and 2018.

This year Hewett’s already made the quarter finals of the Australian Open men’s singles and the semi final of the men’s doubles with regular partner and fellow British star Gordon Reid.

Hewett says of his recent performances, “2018 was a good year for me, but there’s lots to improve upon, new goals have been set for 2019 and hopefully ending up in regaining the world number one position.”

The doubles duo of Hewett and Reid will also continue their run at Wimbledon later this year but Hewett will have set his sites on singles glory to back up his US Open victory.

ellesse are making waves in the British game with the announcement of a number of new sponsorships with leading British stars including British number one Johanna Konta, rising star Cameron Norrie and Davis Cup regular James Ward.

Hewett pointed out that, “ellesse’s heritage in tennis runs deep and to know that legends like Boris Becker and Pat Cash played in their clothing makes me proud to now be a part of that rich history. However, it’s also exciting to be a part of the future alongside Johanna, Cameron and James. There’s plenty of colour throughout ellesse’s range and their style credentials are just as impressive as their performance ones. I can’t wait to get out on court in their kit”

ellesse themselves have said: “It is not every day that you get the opportunity to partner with the world number two and so we’re incredibly excited that Alfie has joined the ellesse family. ellesse has always believed that style and flair are integral to playing sport and our aim is to create clothing that not only looks good, but also helps our athletes to perform to their very best. With that in mind, we’re very excited about the year ahead for Alfie and supporting him in his quest to reclaim his World number one ranking in ellesse.”
