Alex Eala suffered a crushing defeat to Karolina Muchova in the Miami Open fourth round.
After a promising start to the tournament, during which she defeated Laura Siegemund and Magda Linette, Eala was blown away by Muchova’s ball-striking on Monday.
Muchova dominated the contest, eventually winning 6-0, 6-2 in exactly one hour.
This prompted Brad Gilbert to conclude that Eala must ‘dramatically improve’ her serve, after winning only 36 per cent of her first serve points.
What does Alexandra Eala need to improve in 2026 to challenge for a Grand Slam title?
However, it is not all doom and gloom for Eala, who now has an excellent opportunity to bounce back from her Miami Open campaign.
Alex Eala has very few points to defend during the clay-court swing
After losing to Muchova on Monday, Eala is set to fall 16 places to world number 45.
This, of course, is an unfortunate development for the Filipina, who will hope to bounce back quickly during the clay-court swing.
The 20-year-old has a great chance of doing so as she has very few points to defend over the next two months.

Last year, Eala earned only 67 WTA ranking points across four clay-court events: an ITF event in Oeiras, and tournaments in Madrid, Rome and Paris.
This year, Eala is set to begin her clay-court swing at the Linz Open in Austria: a WTA 500 event.
Consequently, Eala could eclipse her 2025 clay-court points total by reaching the Linz quarter-finals.
The Filipina is then likely to take part in both the Madrid and Italian Opens before making her way to Paris for the French Open.
At all these events, Eala has significant opportunities to improve her ranking. She lost in the first round of the Italian Open and French Open in 2025, and reached the second round in Madrid.
| Tournament | Result | WTA Points |
| ITF Oeiras | Round of 16 [Second Round] | 12 |
| Madrid Open | Second Round | 35 |
| Italian Open | First Round | 10 |
| French Open | First Round | 10 |
Alex Eala’s first win at a WTA 1000 clay-court event
In 2024, Alex Eala received a wildcard for the Madrid Open main draw.
In the first round, Eala fought from a set down to defeat Ukrainian Lesia Tsurenko 2-6, 6-4, 6-4 – winning her first match at a WTA 1000 clay-court event.
Eala’s run was ended in the second round by 27th seed Sorana Cirstea, who defeated the youngster 6-3, 6-7, 6-4.
Does anybody else even come close to Alex Eala’s popularity right now?
Eala avenged her Madrid Open loss earlier this year, beating Cirstea 7-6, 6-4 in the Dubai Tennis Championships fourth round.
