Alex de Minaur bounced back from losing his first two games at the ATP Finals to defeat Taylor Fritz and qualify for the knockouts.

de Minaur lost to Carlos Alcaraz and Lorenzo Musetti in Turin before his victory against Fritz secured his qualification.

The Australian will play Jannik Sinner in the semi-finals of his second ATP Finals, a player he is yet to beat in their 12 meetings.

Despite his losing record at the ATP Finals, de Minaur secured a surprising feat at the tournament that only two other players have managed.

Alex de Minaur’s remarkable ATP Finals achievement

The Australian became just the third man to qualify for the knockout stages of the ATP Finals with just one group stage win.

Kei Nishikori and David Nalbandian are the only two other players to qualify from their group after winning just one match.

Nalbandian managed the feat in 2006, when he defeated Andy Roddick but lost to Roger Federer and Ivan Ljubicic. The Argentine was then swept by James Blake in the final four.

Nishikori, meanwhile, managed to sneak through to the knockouts in 2016 by beating Stan Wawrinka and losing to Andy Murray and Marin Cilic.

The Japanese star was resoundingly beaten in the semi-finals by Novak Djokovic, falling to a 6-1, 6-1 defeat.

What Alex de Minaur was doing during Carlos Alcaraz vs Lorenzo Musetti

After de Minaur defeated Fritz at the ATP Finals, he needed Alcaraz to win against Musetti to ensure his victory.

The Australian’s fiancee, Katie Boulter, shared an insight into what he was like during the ATP Finals match.

Taking to X to reply to a video of de Minaur shouting: “Let’s go!” at the Australian Open, Boulter joked that it was similar to the way he was acting during Alcaraz’s match.

de Minaur will play Sinner in the semi-final on November 15, with the order of play yet to be confirmed by the tournament.
