Alex de Minaur has continued his really worrying trend after his loss to Carlos Alcaraz in the ATP Finals

Alex de Minaur suffered another loss to Carlos Alcaraz on Sunday, defeated by the Spaniard at the 2025 ATP Finals.

De Minaur was in a commanding position in the first set tiebreak, leading 5-3. However, he lost the next four points and eventually lost the match 6-7, 2-6.

This was de Minaur’s latest disappointing loss against the Spaniard: de Minaur has never defeated Alcaraz, who has a 5-0 record against the Australian.

In fact, the Australian has a concerning record against top 10 players in general.

Alex de Minaur has lost his last 15 matches against top 10 players

Since defeating Daniil Medvedev at the 2024 French Open, Alex de Minaur has failed to defeat top-10 players on 15 consecutive occasions.

During this drought, de Minaur has lost to Alcaraz three times, Jannik Sinner five times, and Taylor Fritz twice.

He has also lost to Andrey Rublev, Ben Shelton, Daniil Medvedev, Novak Djokovic and Alexander Zverev during the same period.

It must be noted that during this period, de Minaur defeated Alexander Zverev at the 2025 Laver Cup. However, the Laver Cup is not an ATP Tour event and simply cannot emulate the atmosphere and intensity of Tour play.

Simply put, if de Minaur does not turn the tide against top-10 players, he will struggle to win a Grand Slam during his career.

De Minaur – who has excelled on hard courts this year – has been a top 10 player for some time, and yet he struggles to defeat his peers at the top of the food chain.

Why might this be?

Alex de Minaur lacks a powerful weapon

Alex de Minaur’s greatest strength is his speed. The ‘Demon’ is undoubtedly one of the fastest players in tennis history, and he utilises this facet to great effect.

However, having excellent court speed is simply not enough when facing the likes of Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz.

Various players in the top 10 boast shots that are either the best – or one of the best – in class. For example, Alexander Zverev can rely on his backhand, Ben Shelton can call on his booming serve, and Carlos Alcaraz has the best forehand on Tour.

This is not to say de Minaur is a poor player, not by any stretch. The Australian is an immensely talented player who could go on to achieve great things on the ATP Tour.

However, until he develops a weapon that he can consistently rely on in big moments, one fears that he may never take the ultimate step and achieve Grand Slam glory.
