Rafael Nadal cruises into third round at French Open
Rafael Nadal eased into the third round of the French Open with a convincing win over Mackenzie McDonald.
The Spaniard was rarely troubled by the American, who had used a protected ranking to reach the main draw, dropping just four games in a comfortable 6-1, 6-0, 6-3 win out on Court Philippe Chatrier.
Nadal was by no means too troubled in his opening round win against Egor Gerasimov but this was a much more impressive performance as he looks to round into form and capture a 13th title at Roland Garros.
He will face Kei Nishikori or Stefano Travaglia in the third round on Friday.
Nadal was taken to deuce by McDonald in his opening service game but took control after that, with breaks in the fourth and sixth games allowing him to comfortably serve out the opening set in just 32 minutes.
McDonald looked to try and work his way into the match, even trying an underarm serve at one point, but could not find anyway to consistently break through the world number two and the Spaniard extended his run of games to 11 with a dominant bagel set.
The American managed to halt the run of games against him early on in the third set but still found himself a break down quickly as Nadal closed in on a third round berth. The 19-time major winner broke for the final time when 5-3 up in the third set to seal victory in just an hour and 40 minutes.
