Novak Djokovic won his first Grand Slam title at the Australian Open in 2008 but it was not until 2011 that the Serb became a serial winner of matches. Despite his breakthrough in Melbourne, Djokovic still found it hard to dislodge Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal from their perch at the top of the game. However, everything changed when he led Serbia to victory in the Davis Cup at the end of 2010.
Beginning with his opening victory in the Davis Cup final, Djokovic went on a 43-match winning run which saw him win successive titles in Melbourne, Dubai, Indian Wells, Miami, Belgrade, Madrid and Rome. “After the Davis Cup win I was full of life, full of energy, eager to come back to the tennis court, eager to play some more, win some other tournaments,” Djokovic said. “In a sentence, I lost my fear.”
Djokovic’s winning rampage in the first half of 2011 ended with his loss to Federer in the semi-finals of the French Open, but he was immediately back on track as he won the first of his five Wimbledon titles the following month. He won 10 titles that year, a total he went on to beat in 2015, when he won 11, including the Australian Open, Wimbledon, the US Open, the year-end ATP Finals and six Masters 1000 tournaments. He won 82 matches in 2015, his best return to date.
