Dominic Thiem: Worried about US Open risks

‘I did not deserve to win, nothing worked’ – Dominic Thiem concerned about his game after shock Rio loss

Dominic Thiem admitted that he has concerns over his game after his shock defeat to qualifier Gianluca Mager at Rio.

Thiem was the overwhelming favourite to win the title in Rio, but struggled all week back on his favour clay surface.

And he eventually fell at the quarter-final stage, losing 7-6 (7-4), 7-5 to the unfancied Italian before admitting he couldn’t have any complaints at all.

“I did not play my best tennis this week,” Dominic Thiem said after the match. “I was trying everything.

“Unfortunately, I did not deserve to win. He was a better player.

“I was feeling I was all the time in defence, with not enough power in my strokes.

“I tried to play more aggressive, serve and volley, more slices. But it did not work out.”

Mager on the other hand, was understandably thrilled with his surprise win, and declared it an ’emotional’ day for him.

“It’s unbelievable,” he said. “For me, it was a dream only to play against him.

“Now that I beat him, for me, it is a dream. He is a great, unbelievable player. I am very emotional.”
