Roger Federer gives injury update, reveals main disappointment in loss to Dimitrov at US Open


Roger Federer had just suffered a crushing defeat to Grigor Dimitrov at the US Open when he identified why the result was so disappointing and gave further details on the back injury that had troubled him throughout the 5 set match

 

Roger Federer is never one to try and find excuses for tough losses but it’s become clear that his back problem was a key factor behind succumbing in the 5th set to a resurgent Grigor Dimitrov during their quarter final at the 2019 US Open.

Federer was speaking to the press when he explained that his upper back injury was something that would bother him for around 3 days and would then disappear. He went on to say that the short term nature of the injury made his loss that bit more harder to swallow.

Federer would have seen this year’s US Open as a great chance to add to his total of 20 Grand Slam singles titles especially because World No.1 Novak Djokovic had already been knocked out of the event which in theory left a clear path to a final with Rafa Nadal. But Dimitrov, the surprise package of this year’s tournament, had other ideas and eventually came through against the Swiss maestro in 5 sets

The 38 year old Federer knows that time is running out to add to his tally of 20 Grand Slam singles titles and so far this year he’s already lost the Wimbledon final after having two championship points which will make this failure at the US Open hard to swallow. To have made it through to the quarter final and for his form to be so good would have given Federer renewed confidence that he can still win the biggest titles in the sport he has dominated for over 15 years.
