Thiem and Zverev handed tough draws in Hamburg

Young tennis superstars Dominic Thiem and Alexander Zverev were hoping for a succesful return to the clay of Europe this week at the Hamburg Open but the draw hasn’t been kind for either player

Both Dominic Thiem and Alexander Zverev are playing at the Hamburg Open this week in an attempt to get their seasons back on track after dissapointing recent results. Whilst Thiem made the final of the French Open he would have been incredbily dissapointed to lose in the first round at Wimbledon. Zverev has strgguled for form all season and also lost in the fist round at Wimbledon.

However, neither player would have been particularly happy when they saw who they had drawn in their respective first round matches this week. Top seed Thiem faces clay court specialts Pablo Cuevas of Uruguay whilst second seed Zverev must face Nicola Jarry who is coming off the back of his first ever tournament win.

Zverev has been dealing with a number of distractions recently which appear to have contributed to his on court performances. Since the start of the year he’s dropped down from No. 3 to No. 5 win the world rankings and omnly recorded 1 tournament victiory. He has played Jarry twice this year on clay losing once and winning once. But maybe this week will see a change in fortunes especially as Zverev will be using a brand new racket for the first time.

Thiem will be a lot more confident with his form expecially on the red dirt after a strong clay court season saw him win in Barcelona and make the final for the third succesvie year at the French Open in Paris. He beat Cuevas in 4 sets during that run at Roland Garros and was victorious in their other meeting this year at the Argentina Open.
